This is a feature-reduced version of Newton’s Aquarium. It has been provided so that you may evaluate the software without risk. With this demo you will not be able to save, export or print the universe documents that you create or modify. If you would like to use Newton’s Aquarium in your classroom, you must purchase an institution licence. Please see the ordering information, below, for further details.
Newton’s Aquarium is an interactive physics package that helps you visualize and understand Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation. While building and exploring your own solar systems, you will be exposed to many of the core concepts in classical physics. Newton’s Aquarium was designed for use in high school and college physics studies.
Version 1.1 adds several new features, including:
• 4th order Runge-Kutta error correction
• Collision detection (bodies are combined on impact)
• User-defined radius and new, scaled, body graphics
• Addition of asteroid body type
• Basic 3-D support (xy-, xz- and yz-planes)
• Gravitation Ltd. 4.0 & 5.0 document support
• Improved status bar (camera view and elapsed time added)
• On-line HTML User’s Guide
• Balloon help and tooltip support for toolbar tools
• Command clicking window title for file location popup menu
• Custom icons for text and picture files
• More open documents at one time and lower memory requirements
• New sample universes
Requirements
• Mac OS 7.0 or later (Mac OS 8.0 or later recommended)
• 2 MB free memory (3 MB or more preferred)
• 68020 processor (68040 or PowerPC recommended)
Sample Documents
We have included a number of sample universe documents to help you get started. The samples will give you an idea of some of the concepts that can be explored using Newton’s Aquarium. Many of the samples include a student activity that is displayed when the document is first opened. Stationery pads (otherwise known as templates) have also been provided for each of the samples.
Universe documents created with Newton’s Aquarium 1.0 are compatible with version 1.1, but will need a few minor adjustments in order to take advantage of new features.
Documentation
A web-based User’s Guide is now included and can be accessed from the Help menu. The User’s Guide is best viewed with a web browser that supports HTML 3.2 or later, such as Netscape Navigator 3.0 or Internet Explorer 3.0. A connection to the internet is not required in order to view the User’s Guide.
In addition, Balloon Help is provided for all menu and dialog items. Balloons, as well as tooltips, are also provided for all toolbar tools.
